There is a Story to Tell in Everything that Happens to You

There is such relief when I finally get a story out of my mind and down on paper.

There is such relief when I finally get a story out of my mind and down on paper.

This weekend, my husband took a friend’s very young son to pee in the bushes at the picnic area of the pool when evening came and the bathrooms had closed.

No real point to sharing that anecdote, other than it was fun to type those words.

For a long time now, wherever I go, whatever I do, someone invariably asks me if I am going to write about “it.”

“It” can be anything from elaborating on this peeing in the bushes story to summer fireworks in the morning, a barrage of mosquito bites, wiping out on the tennis court, vacation planning mishaps. Whatever.

Stories rent real estate in my mind, and then get called back up when a point needs to be made. The story itself can be quite benign--often the real story unfolds in someone’s reaction to what happened, in the memory that the event unearths, or in the lesson learned.

It makes me anxious when the story floats around in my head, before it becomes a concrete being. There is a great relief when you get the idea for sharing a story out of the brain vault and down on paper. Even if it is merely a title and a few bullet points.

You can jot the bare bones of a story that you might want to use later into a google doc, and then save it in a folder marked as post ideas. I have many anecdotes in my folder, some fully fleshed out, some just bare bones.

As I have written many times, there is story in everything. It is up to you to spin it so that it promotes and supports your brand story so that people will get a little glimpse into why they should do business with you.

Let me know if you need a little boost coming up with ideas for some things to develop into usable content.
