Don’t be a Writer; Be Writing

When people ask me what I do, I say I am a writer.

But we really are all writers.

I have this sign on my desk and it reminds me how important it is to always be writing.

Yesterday, I posted two reels and wrote the copy that went with them. Each was only a sentence or so long. Was that writing? I shared news of some entrepreneurial women in the appropriate Facebook groups. Was that writing? I wrote a whole bunch of emails. How about that?

I don’t consider any of that writing. To be fair, an email could “count” as writing, depending on the subject matter and the purpose, but yesterday’s were just running through my in-box, like doing a day of errands--accomplishing, sure, and time out of the house, but not an outing.

To me, writing happens when you have changed something. Made someone think about something, conjured up an emotion, made them reminisce, or take an action.

Real writing has a purpose. That purpose could be to entertain, persuade, or educate, but it does something.

So, yes, we are all writers.

If you are reading this far, then you must care about writing and messaging. I love challenging others to write. One of my favorite exercises (which I have done on this account and am due to post again soon) is the exercise for different people in different professions to write a few sentences about a simple topic and see all the fun perspectives that arise based upon their business.

And, yes, this little post is writing. I hope it made you think for a minute.

What have you “written” lately?
